Every leak investigation should begin with the cheapest possible test, because dry Utah air is very good at making a healthy pool look sick. Hot afternoons, low humidity and a steady breeze can move a surprising amount of water off an open surface, and an owner who has never watched the level closely tends to read normal loss as an emergency.
The bucket test settles it. Fill a bucket with pool water, set it on a step so it sits at a similar temperature and in the same conditions, and mark the water line inside the bucket and on the pool wall. Run the pool as you normally would for a day or two, then compare. If both dropped about the same, that is evaporation. If the pool dropped noticeably more, you have a leak.
Confirmed loss is the main signal, but a pool gives other hints along the way. Chemistry that will not hold is a common one, because you are constantly diluting it with fresh water and wondering why nothing stays in range. So is an autofill that runs far more often than it used to, since it quietly hides the symptom while documenting the problem on your water bill every month.
Outside the pool, look for ground that stays damp with no obvious source, settling or soft spots in the surround, or unusually vigorous grass in one patch. Air in the system is another clue: bubbles returning to the pool or a pump that keeps losing prime can point to a suction-side leak drawing air instead of pushing water out. None of these prove anything alone, but together they build a case.
This is the single most useful thing a homeowner can observe before calling anybody. Return lines are pressurized while the pump runs, so a leak on the pressure side pushes water out faster during operation and slows down when the system shuts off. If the level drops noticeably more while the equipment is running, the pressure side becomes the prime suspect and the search narrows immediately.
Reverse the test. If the loss happens mainly when the pump is off, suspicion moves to the suction side or to the pool sitting at static pressure. If the rate is steady regardless of what the equipment is doing, that points toward the shell itself or a fitting rather than the plumbing. None of this is proof, but it narrows the search meaningfully and can save a technician real time.
Within reason, let a suspected leak find its own level. Water that falls and then stops at a particular height has often stopped there because it reached the elevation of the failure and ran out of anything to push through. Loss that halts right at the skimmer throat suggests the skimmer itself or the line leaving it, which is one of the most common failures in freeze-thaw country.
A level that settles at the light suggests the niche or its conduit. Water that keeps dropping well below all fittings points at the shell, a main drain or deeper plumbing. This is useful information to collect before anyone arrives, though it is worth saying that letting a pool drop too far has its own risks and should not be taken to extremes without advice.
Once loss is confirmed and roughly characterized, the plumbing gets tested rather than theorized about over the phone. Each line is isolated, plugged and put under pressure on its own. A line that holds pressure is eliminated from the investigation. A line that will not hold is the problem, and the way it loses pressure helps place the failure along its run.
This is the whole reason to resist the urge to start digging. Exploratory excavation is expensive, disruptive and frequently wrong, while a systematic test turns a yard-sized question into a specific answer. It also often ends the investigation above ground entirely, since a meaningful share of leaks turn out to be at the equipment pad, in a skimmer or around a light.
Some loss is entirely normal, especially on an uncovered pool during hot, dry, windy stretches, and it varies with weather week to week. Rather than chasing a number, compare your pool against a bucket in the same conditions. That control removes the guesswork. Consistent loss well beyond what the bucket shows is the signal worth acting on.
It should not be. A leak going into a Utah winter can hold water where a closing tried to remove it, or drop the level below where the closing set it, and freeze-thaw does the rest. Diagnosing and repairing before closing is far cheaper than opening in spring to find split plumbing on top of the original leak.
No, and shell cracks are not the most common cause. Plumbing runs, skimmer throats, return fittings, light niches and the equipment pad account for a large share of them. Fine crazing in plaster is usually cosmetic and not a leak path at all. Proper diagnosis matters precisely because the assumed cause and the actual cause are so often different.
